Deputies On Scene With Suspicious Device on Buck Boulevard
Tuesday, February 10,
Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

At about noon today, deputy sheriffs and officers from the Department of Community Supervision discovered a suspicious device during the search of the home of a State probationer on Buck Boulevard. An Ordinance Disposal team from Floyd County responded to the scene and removed the device with a remotely controlled robot. One person, Jacob Austin McAfee, age 34, of 879 Buck Boulevard, Calhoun, was arrested at the scene. Detectives are in the process of executing search warrants at the scene and interviewing witnesses.
McAfee will be charged with hazardous incendiary device and firearms related offenses. More arrests are expected. Buck Boulevard is closed to through traffic as of 2:30pm. Deputies are working to reopen the roadway.

Sheriff's K9 Unit Completes Annual Certification Process
Monday, February 9th

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

On Wednesday, February 4th the Gordon County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit completed their annual skills certification process in Gwinnett County. The four dogs and their handlers successfully completed a rigorous testing process in their respective fields.

-Czeck, a 6 year old Dutch Shepherd handled by Corporal Dale Pullen, received certificates in Narcotics Detection, Tracking, and Patrol Apprehension.

-Ole' Jasper, (alias 'King Machine'), a 2 year old German Shorthaired Pointer also handled by Corporal Pullen, was certified in tracking.

-Maggie, a 2 year old Bloodhound handled by Sergeant 1st Class Lindsey Azar, was certified in tracking.

-Max, a 1 year old Bloodhound handled by
Detective Cody Jones was certified in tracking.

The event was coordinated by the governing body of the National Narcotics Detection Dog Association. The tracking dogs are regularly utilized in searches for missing children, elderly individuals, as well as fugitives.

Sheriff Ralston offered a big thanks to Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor and his staff for hosting the event.

The snowfall affecting our community appears to be stopping. No road closures are reported. The brisk winds today played a role in clearing snow. However, the frigid temperatures will remain with us through tomorrow. Icing is still a concern in elevated and/or shaded areas, on bridges and overpasses, and anywhere the snow accumulated and froze in place. Motorists should continue to exercise caution when driving, particularly on secondary roadways.

Snow continues to fall on Gordon County this morning as the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until this evening. Sheriff’s patrols are reporting that conditions on some roadways have worsened in the last couple of hours, particularly in the Resaca - Sugar Valley area. Areas of higher elevation, bridges, and overpasses throughout the entire county are particularly vulnerable to icing. Secondary roads are more affected than state highways. Motorists should be aware of snow related hazards, and avoid unnecessary travel.

The temperature is decreasing , so falling snow will stick to the cold surfaces. Motorists should be alert to the possibility of slick/frozen roadways and exercise caution when driving.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT…
Wednesday, January 21,
The National Weather Service (NWS) continues to forecast that a “Major Winter Weather Event “ will impact Northern Georgia, possibly arriving Friday afternoon and possibly lasting through Monday. The Sheriffs Office is closely monitoring weather reports, and is coordinating preparations with other County agencies as well as our law enforcement partners.
The forecast includes the strong possibility of “significant ice accumulation” which will impair and/or prevent travel, and cause extended power outages.
Residents are urged to prepare accordingly, with enough secondary heat sources, batteries, water, and non-perishable foods to last several days if needed. Ensure a sufficient supply of prescription medications as well.
Should icy conditions materialize, be prepared to avoid travel.
Extra deputy sheriffs have been placed on standby for the duration of the event and will be deployed accordingly.
Residents are urged to stay aware of the evolving weather conditions via NWS and commercial media.

PURSUIT ENDS WITH ARREST OF TENNESSEE FUGITIVE
Friday, December 26, 2025
Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:
At about 8:15pm tonight, deputy sheriffs were requested to assist Calhoun Police in a vehicle pursuit of an individual wanted for Attempted Murder in Tennessee. The pursuit began in Calhoun and progressed east on SR 156 (Red Bud Road). The suspect, driving a truck, was traveling at speeds in excess on 90 miles per hour, and recklessly into oncoming traffic, willfully creating an extremely treacherous situation. Just east of Red Bud, a deputy sheriff executed a PIT maneuver, forcing the dangerous fugitive from the roadway. His truck crashed down an embankment and he was apprehended without further resistance. The criminal investigation is being led by Calhoun Police in conjunction with Tennessee authorities. There are no other suspects at large, and no further danger to the public.
