Burned Car Case Results in Arrests for Drugs, Burglaries, Thefts
Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:
On Tuesday, July 26th, deputy sheriffs and Gordon County Fire/Rescue personnel responded to the scene of an automobile on fire off Firetower Road, just north of Calhoun. After the blaze was extinguished, Sheriff’s detectives determined that the car had been reported stolen in Calhoun several days earlier. Detectives believe that arson was the cause of the fire. Later that same afternoon, detectives were canvassing the same neighborhood when they encountered two local men, one of whom fit the description of an individual being sought for questioning. Upon being approached by the detectives, both men abandoned their bicycles and fled on foot. One of the men was quickly captured by the detectives, and the second man only a few minutes later by a uniformed deputy who had responded to the scene. Both men were found in possession of controlled substances on their persons and were arrested without further incident. These men are identified as: Nathan Brooks, age 29, of 2321 US Highway 41, Calhoun, and William B. Quiroz, age 26, of 442 Fog Road, Resaca. Both have been charged with Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act. Brooks was already being sought on outstanding arrest warrants for an unrelated Trespass incident as well as violation of probation.
Two days later during the course of this same investigation, deputy sheriffs arrested one Jason Chasteen, age 32, of 239 Firetower Road, Calhoun, after Chasteen was involved in a one car automobile crash on Sugar Valley Road. Chasteen was arrested without incident at the scene and charged with DUI and other traffic related offenses by state troopers. Sheriff’s detectives subsequently charged Chasteen with Residential Burglary (2 counts), Automobile Burglary (8 counts), and Possession of Tools for the Commission of a Crime. Detectives also had developed information which led to the execution of two search warrants at residences on Firetower Road. A substantial amount of property believed to have been taken in several residential burglaries as well as auto burglaries has been recovered, identified, and is in the process of being returned to the lawful owners.
Some of the defendants are cooperating with the investigating detectives and more arrests and search warrants are imminent.
