Deputy Involved Shooting

At about 3 a.m. this morning (March 26th), deputy sheriffs attempted to stop a motorcycle on US Highway 41 near Calhoun. The motorcyclist sped away from the deputies at a high rate of speed, and led them on a chase into the Newtown community. The motorcycle crashed at Newtown Creek. The motorcycle driver, subsequently identified as a resident of Carroll County, told the deputies that he had a gun and threatened to shoot them. When the violator reached inside his clothes as if drawing a weapon, the deputies fired their weapons at him, striking and wounding him. The violator still refused to surrender, holding officers at bay until about 5 a.m. The violator subsequently gave up and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported under guard to a local hospital where he is being treated. No officers were injured. Drug related paraphernalia and a large amount of cash was found on his person. At the time of this incident, the violator was being sought by authorities in Carroll County for (felony) Failure to Appear in Superior Court, and (felony) Violation of Probation. Georgia Department of Corrections records indicate that he was convicted of Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement Officers, Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement Officers, and other crimes in Douglas County, and is still on probation for those offenses. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an investigation into this event at the request of the Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE: The violator involved in this incident was released from the hospital and lodged in the County Jail on Monday night, March 27. He is identified as CHRISTOPHER BOYER, of 154 Parbette Street, Temple, Georgia. He faces charges of Felony Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers, Terroristic Threats/Acts, and a host of traffic related offenses.
