High Speed Pursuit Ends in Crash, Arrest of Tennessee Man Wanted for Attempted Murder

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

On Thursday evening at about 8 p.m., a deputy sheriff on routine patrol observed a suspicious vehicle travelling north on Interstate 75 near Calhoun. When the deputy attempted to stop this car, the driver fled away at a high rate of speed, travelling in excess of 100 miles per hour, and weaving across 4 lanes of traffic in an extremely dangerous manner. The chase continued to the area of Exit 317 (State Route 225) where the suspect-vehicle left the interstate, travelling down the exit ramp before the driver lost control and ‘cartwheeled’ end-over-end several times before coming to rest in a culvert. The deputy sheriff  immediately apprehended the driver as he tried to exit the wrecked car. The driver, subsequently identified as one Marcus Dewitt Smith, age 19, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was found to be wanted by authorities in Hamilton County/Chattanooga, Tennessee for Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Robbery, and weapons violations. Smith was taken to Gordon Hospital Emergency Room where he was treated for non – life threatening injuries. He is lodged in the Gordon County Jail pending extradition proceedings to return him to Tennessee. His vehicle was taken to the Sheriff’s Office where sheriff’s detectives executed a search warrant for the car’s contents.

Sheriff Ralston said, ” I’m pleased that my deputies were able to quickly resolve a very hazardous situation and effect the arrest of a dangerous fugitive without injury to any innocent people. This man will now be returned to Tennessee authorities to face his charges there.”
