DEPUTIES ARREST MARYLAND DUO STEALING FROM COIN OPERATED AIR COMPRESSORS:
At about 6am November 27, deputies responded to a report of a theft from a coin operated air compressor at a convenience store near Calhoun. Witnesses described the thieves fleeing in a black Chevy SUV. About an hour later, deputies spotted the offenders breaking into another machine at a convenience store in Calhoun. Other officers responded and the pair surrendered peacefully. Deputies found over a thousand dollars ($1000.00) in quarters in their automobile, along with a stolen license plate, a crowbar used to break into the machine, and a shop vac they used to extract the coins. Sheriff’s detectives found where they were staying at a local motel, executed a search warrant there, and found several thousands of dollars in quarters in the room. One of the violators told one of the arresting officers they’d been targeting machines all the way down from Maryland to Georgia. The defendants were identified as: 1. Wilbur Antonio Flores, age 33, of Baltimore, MD, and
2. Luis Viera, age 33, of Brooklyn, MD.

SCAM 🚨 ALERT 🚨 UPDATE:

🚔 GCSO has received more reports of SCAMMERS contacting local residents by cell phone posing as deputies. The SCAMMERS are using the names of actual GCSO employees, and leaving a callback number which is answered by a SCAM recording. The SCAMMERS are demanding payment for “missing jury duty” and/or “to avoid a warrant”.
The Sheriff’s Office NEVER SOLICITS MONEY! If anyone misses jury duty they will be contacted in person by a deputy in uniform.
DO NOT release personal details or financial information to unknown persons.
Detectives have been assigned to investigate these calls which often originate overseas.

S C A M A L E R T :
Monday, November 18th

The Sheriff’s Office received a report today regarding a telephone SCAM in which a caller impersonated a deputy sheriff. The caller used the name of an actual deputy, and demanded that the victim forward money electronically as a penalty for missing jury duty. The caller then insisted that the victim make a second payment.
The Sheriff’s Office NEVER under any circumstances solicits money from citizens. If a citizen misses jury duty, he or she would be contacted in person by a deputy in uniform.
Sheriff Ralston urges citizens to NEVER send money to unfamiliar or unknown persons, and to be aware that these scammers are skillfull in impersonating officials. Most of these telephone scams originate overseas. Sheriff Ralston urges citizens to NEVER give out personal data or financial information to unknown callers. Simply hang up.
