Gordon County Subjected to Overnight Flash Flooding, Many Roads Affected

Overnight (Friday/Saturday May 18/19), Gordon County was subjected to a series of severe thunderstorms which produced locally intense rain and flooding. Sheriff Ralston has deployed extra deputy sheriffs for the duration of the event and senior officers continue to monitor the situation closely as more rain is forecast. Deputies have responded to dozens of water and weather related calls involving persons and automobiles trapped by floodwaters, utility lines and poles down, and storm debris blown and washed into roadways. So far no injuries have been reported due to the hazardous conditions. Deputies have coordinated response to the storm closely with Gordon County Emergency Management, Public Works, and Fire/Rescue, who have performed a number of water rescues tonight. E911 personnel also did a commendable job under trying circumstances.
A partial list of affected roadways as of 4 a.m. follows:
Dews Pond Road near Antioch Church, Union Grove Church Road from SR 53 to Trimble Hollow Road, Morrow Road, Miller Ferry Road near South Holcomb Road, Millers Ferry Road, McDaniel Station Road, Johnson Lake Road in vicinity of old Mercer Airfield, Trimble Hollow Road near US 41, Cash Road near SR 53, Blackwood Place/Blackwood Court, Gardner Springs Road, Campbell Road near Rolling Acres, Oak Grove Church Road near Bartow County Line, Farmville Road, Plainview Road near SR 53, Plainview Road/Erwin Hill Church Road, Erwin Road, Blalock Road, US 41 at I-75 Underpass. Other roads may become affected as time passes and waters rise; motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution.
Sheriff Ralston says, “DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATER !”
ALSO: U.S. Highway 411 north of Fairmount remains partially closed due to cleanup from a very serious automobile collision last night.
