Hazardous Winter Weather Continues, Creating Treacherous Driving Conditions

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

The National Weather Service has continued the Winter Storm WARNING for Gordon County and most of Northern Georgia until 1 p.m. Thursday (Feb 13). A mixture of rain/sleet/snow began falling in the early morning hours today, in addition to the 4 inches of snow that fell yesterday. Although there was some improvement in surface conditions  yesterday evening, roads and highways are rapidly becoming hazardous again today. The Weather Service is predicting several inches of ice/snow accumulation throughout the day, and the likelihood  of sleet and freezing rain makes power outages possible. Our deputies continue to patrol in marked, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and our command staff is monitoring the constantly evolving weather conditions. We urge everyone to avoid travel if possible. We advise everyone to check on their neighbors, and to use caution with alternative heating sources. Our Chaplaincy Unit has a list of local churches designated as emergency shelter locations should the need arise. Everyone should monitor the media outlets and the NWS to keep abreast of weather conditions and advisories.
