Sheriff Advises Gordon County Residents to Be Aware of Potential for Severe Weather Today and Tonight

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Announces:

The potential for severe weather exists for the next 24 hours here in northwestern Georgia, including our community. As of 2pm, a flood watch is in effect. Later today and through the night to December 24th, there is a 100% chance of rain and the forecast indicates the likelihood of strong thunderstorms. There is also the possibility of high winds and/or tornadoes. Residents are urged to monitor the National Weather Service (NWS) and/or local media outlets to stay abreast of rapidly evolving weather conditions. If traveling on local roadways, motorists should never attempt to cross floodwaters. The sheriff has placed additional deputies  on stand-by for duty in the event of severe weather here in Gordon County, as senior officers continue to monitor forecasts and local conditions.

UPDATE  UPDATE  UPDATE… WIDESPREAD ROAD FLOODING / CLOSURES  10:30am Thursday, December 24th

Locally heavy rainfall from last night and into the morning hours today has created hazardous road conditions throughout Gordon County. A number of roads have been closed due to flooding and in some instances of the roadway surface structure failing. Sheriff Ralston advises residents to avoid unnecessary travel, and to use extreme caution on all roadways. Drivers should pay particular attention to barriers which have been set in place, and be on the lookout for standing water. The following is  list of roadways on which flooding has been reported and/or closures:

Scott Brown Road near Fairmount, Curtis Parkway near EMS Station, US Highway 41 (north), Harmony Church Road, Lovers Lane Road, Mt. Zion Road, County Line Road (north), Craigtown Road, Kinman Road, Folsom Road near Windy Hill, McDaniel Station Road, Darby Road, Johnson Lake Road, Mauldin Road, Carter Mountain Road near Fairmount, Sam Hunt Road, Dews Pond Road near Antioch, Miller Ferry, and Irwin Mill Road where a mudslide has been reported. Reports of road closures are being received as the rain continues and the travel situation is evolving. Sheriff Ralston also cautions anyone from going about floodwaters in our area as such conditions are extremely dangerous. Gordon County Public Works personnel have worked through the early morning hours identifying affected areas and placing barriers. Extra deputy sheriffs have been deployed across the county for the duration of the event, as well as extra staff having been placed on stand by since the severe weather began yesterday. Senior officers are continuing to monitor NWS and other media outlets. Flooded roads should be reported to E911.

Wrights Hollow Road, Tucker Hollow Road, Hood Street, Harbor Road, Taylortown Road, Owens Chapel, Brackett Road, WaterTank Road, & North Airport Road..Motorist should continue to exercise caution, be attentive to barriers, and never attempt to cross flood waters.
