Sheriff Honors Military Purple Heart Recipients
Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:
Sheriff Mitch Ralston, the Sheriff’s Office staff, and the Sheriff’s Auxiliary joined the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH), Chapter 525 (Northwest Georgia) today in declaring the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office an official “Purple Heart Sheriff’s Office. The Purple Heart, America’s oldest military decoration, is awarded to recipients who are wounded in battle, or the next of kin of those who are killed in battle or die as a result of wounds received. The Purple Heart was originally established by General George Washington in 1782, and is the oldest military decoration still awarded to service members. It was revived by Congress in 1932. Today, Sheriff Ralston unveiled signage at the Sheriff’s Office entrance announcing the new Purple Heart status, surrounded by Auxiliary members, representatives of the American Legion, and a number of veteran Purple Heart recipients. At the unveiling, Sheriff Ralston read a 73 year old Purple Heart letter from the U.S. War Department to Mrs. Mildred Greeson of Resaca, whose husband Homer Greeson was killed in action in World War II, reminding those in attendance that our community will never forget the sacrifice of our veterans. Sheriff Ralston also thanked the MOPH for their service and for selecting the Sheriff’s Office to participate in this program.
