Sheriff’s Jailors Recognized for Lifesaving in Fentanyl Incident
SHERIFF MITCH RALSTON REPORTS:
On the night of April 6th, 2023, one Dwayne Allen McGill, age 39, of a Calhoun address, was brought into the county jail on drug charges. During a routine booking search of his person by jail staff, the defendant removed a plastic bag of what is believed to be fentanyl from his underwear and tried to swallow it. The jail officers acted quickly to physically prevent him from doing so, but when McGill spit the bag out it burst, and the deadly, airborne fentanyl powder spread throughout the small room, contaminating the inmate, and the officers. The defendant convulsed and it was necessary to administer ‘Narcan’. McGill was removed from the jail via ambulance and spent several days hospitalized before subsequently being released to the federal DEA on unrelated charges. Fortunately, the jailors suffered no injury.
On Wednesday, May 18th, Sheriff Ralston recognized the four Sheriff’s Office employees involved in this incident. Sergeant Eric Bohannon and Jailors Rashad Fuller, Randyn Burns, and Mason Hill all received Sheriff’s Commendations for Valor/Lifesaving. Sheriff Ralston said, “These officers undoubtedly saved a human life in very difficult and dangerous circumstances. They are a credit to this Office and this community, and I am proud to serve the people of Calhoun and Gordon County with each of them.”
