Student Struck by Automobile in Red Bud School Parking Lot

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

At approximately 4 p.m. today (August 20) deputy sheriffs and other first responders were dispatched to Red Bud School on Highway 156 in response to a report of a child having been run over by an automobile. According to witnesses, a 12 year old student was sitting on a curb when a pickup truck stopped nearby in the parking lot. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Joshua D. Nilsen, had gotten out of the vehicle to put his own child in it before it rolled over the victim, apparently having been left in gear. Gordon County Fire – Rescue and EMS personnel also responded to the school. The victim was removed from the scene by ambulance. Deputies questioned Nilsen, who appeared visibly shaken and upset. Deputies also questioned other witnesses and performed scene documentation tasks. Nilsen has been charged with 1 count of ‘Reckless Conduct’ in connection with the incident, and will appear in court to answer the charge at a later date.
