Calhoun Man Arrested After Opening Fire on a Deputy at the Sheriff’s Office

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

At about 4 a.m. this morning (September 22), a male individual arrived at the Sheriff’s Office and entered the Jail lobby, asking if the Sheriff’s (business) Office was open at that time. The Jail desk officer told him the business office was closed and the man went back to the parking lot. After returning to the lobby and back out to the parking lot again, the man produced a handgun and opened fire on a deputy sitting in a parked patrol car. A second deputy fired a single shot at the man, who then laid down on the ground and surrendered. He was taken into custody unhurt. The suspect was not struck by gunfire from the deputy, and no deputies were struck by gunfire from the assailant. The man was subsequently identified as one Amara D. Toure, age 45, whose address is listed as 717 Greenbriar Circle, Calhoun. A previous booking address was listed as Apartment B, 280 Briar Patch Calhoun. Jail records indicate that Toure was arrested by Calhoun Police on January 3, 2020 on charges of Aggravated Assault and Cruelty to Children. Toure also had prior arrests in 2019 and 2018. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct an independent investigation into the incident, which is underway at this time.
